The original concept, script, and direction for the anime film "Angel's Egg" were handled by Mamoru Oshii (known for "Ghost in the Shell"), while the original concept and art direction were undertaken by Yoshitaka Amano (known for the "Final Fantasy" series). This definitive book, "THE ART OF Angel's Egg," which includes original illustrations, filmmaking documentation, and image boards that condense the work's worldview, is finally seeing its long-awaited reprint. The first edition was published in 1986, and the revised and expanded edition in 2004.
"Angel's Egg," released as an OVA in 1985, is a legendary work in which Mamoru Oshii, a genius who has overturned the conventions of anime and film with each work he has released, including "Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer," "GHOST IN THE SHELL," and "Innocence," depicted a fantastical other world together with Yoshitaka Amano, who would later become a world-renowned illustrator.
Colors that are almost monochrome, very few lines of dialogue, unusually long takes, and a small number of cuts (approximately 400 cuts) that is about one-third of that of normal animation. The entire film is composed in this ascetic style, and the theme of "doubt about one's own existence," which runs through all of Oshii's works, is deeply reflected.
For Mamoru Oshii, this is his first original work, and there is no doubt that it is an important work that can be said to be the starting point as a writer.
