US Import Duty on Items from Japan: What You Pay and How Long It Takes

TL;DR — As of November 2, 2026, parcels from Japan to the US owe import duty. When you ship with Japan Post EMS (DDP) through OneMall, you pay an estimated 17% of the item price as duty plus a customs handling fee at checkout, and that is final: OneMall pays the US duty for you, so there is no duty bill when your parcel arrives. The rate is our own estimate, not an amount set by US customs.

How much import duty will I pay?

It depends on the shipping method you choose for your parcel. For the US, OneMall collects duty at checkout on two methods, using a flat estimated rate on the item price:

Shipping method to the USDuty collected at checkout (our estimate)Example: ¥10,000 item
Japan Post EMS (DDP)17% of the item price + customs handling fee¥1,700 duty + handling fee; final, no bill on delivery
ECMS15% of the item price + customs handling fee¥1,500 duty + handling fee; no extra fees on delivery
DHL ExpressNot collected at checkoutAssessed by US customs and collected by the carrier

The handling fee and the final total are itemized at checkout before you pay.

These rates are OneMall's own estimates under our checkout rules, not tax advice. The duty US customs assesses depends on how each item is classified and its declared value, so it may differ from our estimate. For Japan Post EMS (DDP) and ECMS, that difference is not charged to you.

How long does DHL take from Japan to the US?

From our own tracking data: half of our delivered DHL parcels to the US arrived within 2.5 days after leaving our warehouse in Japan, and 90% within 6.5 days. See the monthly trend and methodology.

Based on DHL parcels to the US shipped between August 5, 2026 and October 3, 2026, measured from warehouse dispatch to the carrier's first "delivered" scan.
